In the process of culturing iPS cells, it is necessary to apply a "binder" capable of attaching cells to the culture dish in advance. This process takes more than an hour. The research team at Kyoto University found that the protein fragment of laminin 511, which is mixed with cells, can be directly adhered to the container, and the amount of material used is only 1/10 of the original.
The research team said that because regenerative medicine requires the use of large numbers of cells, this approach will help to significantly reduce costs. For example, the cost of materials for cardiomyocyte transplantation currently costs millions of yen and may be compressed to hundreds of thousands of yen in the future.
