10 hypertensives in 3 adults in Shanghai are ill or have not been diagnosed

October 8 is National High Blood Pressure Day. The reporter learned from the Shanghai Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission that the number of hypertensive patients in permanent residents in Shanghai amounts to 6 million, which means that nearly 3 out of every 10 adults are hypertensive patients. On the morning of October 8, the city’s large-scale expert volunteer consultation will be held in Fuxing Park (Yanchang Road 105). At the activity site, Shanghai's famous experts on hypertension prevention and treatment provide citizens with counseling on the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. At the same time, they guide the public on how to measure blood pressure. They also provide on-site services such as free blood pressure measurement and weight measurement.

Hypertension is the most common chronic disease. There are at least 1 high blood pressure in every 5 adults in the world. Hypertension is called a "silent killer," and 50% of stroke and heart disease deaths are related to high blood pressure. Most patients can have no symptoms for a long period of time, and they do not find themselves as high blood pressure until severe complications such as stroke, myocardial infarction, blindness, and renal failure occur.

According to the latest monitoring results of Shanghai's chronic diseases and their risk factors, the number of hypertensive patients in the city's permanent residents is 6 million, which means nearly 3 out of every 10 adults are hypertensive. What is even less optimistic is that half of them do not know that they are ill or have not been diagnosed in the hospital.

It is understood that since the 1990s, the Shanghai Municipal Government has issued a number of policies and documents to prevent and treat hypertension, and implemented various measures for early detection, early diagnosis, and early treatment. At present, Shanghai has provided free blood pressure measurement services to all patients at the community health service centers and some second- and third-tier hospitals who have come to hospital for the first time every year over 35 years old. The service has accumulated a total of more than 170,000 hypertensive patients. At the same time, according to the existing service standards, community family doctors will provide hypertension blood pressure monitoring service for the contracted patients in the jurisdiction at least 4 times a year. At present, nearly 2 million hypertensive patients are registered to receive services at the community health service center.

The Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that citizens not only be able to go to hospital clinics to measure blood pressure, but also can learn their own blood pressure measurement methods, measure their own blood pressure at home, and do a good job of recording blood pressure.

Adults over the age of 35 are advised to measure blood pressure at least once a year. If you already have high blood pressure (130-139/85-89 mmHg), obesity, long-term excessive drinking, and the risk factors for family history of hypertension, it is recommended that blood pressure be measured at least once every six months.

For hypertensive patients, it is recommended that they or their families learn how to measure blood pressure, measure blood pressure regularly, and make long-term blood pressure records. Systolic blood pressure up to 140 mmHg and above and/or systolic blood pressure up to and above 90 mmHg are abnormal blood pressure. When the public finds that blood pressure is abnormal, they should go to the hospital in time for medical advice. (Source: Xinmin Author: Li Ruonan draft selection: Wu Yimin)
