The University of New Otani's research provides a new insight into heart repair, which is how heart patients can use their adult stem cells to regenerate their diseased heart.
The study, led by physiologic researcher Dr. Rajesh Katare, was the first to study the potential of heart repair using three types of stem cells from individual patients.

Under the experimental conditions, the researchers simulated the hypoxic levels of the patient's heart and the conditions of lack of nutrients. He and his colleagues then studied the therapeutic effects of repairing damaged heart cells by each of the three stem cell types.
They found that right atrial stem cells have the greatest protective effect on cardiomyocytes, and ventricular stem cells are most effective in promoting new blood vessel formation.
