On May 5, foreign media said that IBM will use Apple's corporate partnership to develop a clinical computing app for cataract doctors of Bausch & Lomb, a global eye care company.
APP will be combined with IBM's cognitive computing capabilities
In the early days, APP will focus on integrating all of the calculated data, patient data and previous surgical records to make the surgeon's job more efficient. The app was designed with a future in mind to combine with IBM's cognitive computing power.
Now the population is expanding rapidly and cataract patients are also increasing. There are currently 20 million cataract patients worldwide, including 4 million in the United States. The current trend is that more and more patients need help, while doctors are relatively few. It is conceivable that every doctor will face more patients in the next few years. So how to improve efficiency is the bottleneck that Bausch & Lomb is currently facing.
When doctors do cataract surgery, they need to remove the blurred crystal layer in the patient's eyes and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens. Because each patient's eyes are different, a large amount of calculation is required when selecting the appropriate intraocular lens, and most of these calculations are currently only available on paper. Bausch & Lomb has developed a calculation instrument approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, but it has not been integrated with other parts of the surgical procedure.
Andy Chang, senior vice president of Bausch & Lomb, said: “What doctors are doing now is to use the instrument to diagnose the patient, collect the biological data of the eye, print it out, and finally select the implant suitable for the patient. In the whole process, they want Solve a lot of data calculations. All calculations are manual, not automatic, so our real motivation is to make the process simpler and less error-prone."
"IBM works closely with other companies to provide mobile end-user experience in transforming the way work is done by industry experts. We expect mobile technology to benefit the world's busiest doctor, the cataract doctor. Bausch & Lomb has identified a huge group of ophthalmologists. Demand, this app will send the data that ophthalmologists need to their hands to help them make better, more comprehensive decisions for patients," said Mahmoud Nagshineh, general manager of Apple's corporate relations at IBM.
Chang said: "If we think about the problem from the customer's point of view and consider the mobile solution from an industry perspective, then we have to do better, make our doctors more convenient, and ultimately benefit our patients. In this area we can fundamentally or largely improve the way doctors perform cataract surgery."
Previously, IBM's Waston Health Department announced that anyone who uses Apple's Researchkit for research, IBM will provide 1T of storage space for three years.
