Common indicators of muscle oxygen and interpretation

Muscle oxygen data has strong individual and site specificity, and is also affected by factors such as exercise methods and training programs. Therefore, although it is getting more and more attention in athlete training and physical fitness assessment, as well as clinical diagnosis and rehabilitation exercises, the experts' practices are different for their interpretation.

As the scope of use has increased, some reference parameters have gradually surfaced, and some scholars have systematically referred to them as indicators of changes in muscle oxygen dynamics. Such as oxyhemoglobin change, muscle oxygen saturation, decline / increase rate, the occurrence of muscle oxygen point (Breakpoint), total hemoglobin content. The physiological significance of each of them is introduced below.

Oxygenated hemoglobin change: The difference in oxyhemoglobin content before and after the test, reflecting the utilization of oxygen by the muscle.

Muscle oxygen saturation: oxygenated (hemoglobin + myoglobin) / total (hemoglobin + myoglobin), reflecting the organization's transport and consumption of oxygen.

Decline/recovery rate: The rate of decline/recovery of oxyhemoglobin/muscle oxygen saturation during the test, reflecting the strength/recovery of muscle oxygen utilization/recovery.

Muscle oxygen inflection point: Oxygenated hemoglobin and / or muscle oxygen saturation curve from the steady state into the instability of the normal level of instability, showing a relatively obvious inflection point, physiologically related to lactate threshold, anaerobic threshold.

Overshoot value: The curve of muscle oxygen recovery period is significantly larger than the baseline value, which is physiologically related to the open density of capillary network, mitochondrial oxygen consumption capacity and oxygen supply after exercise.

Total hemoglobin: The total hemoglobin content in the muscle during the test, reflecting the oxygen transport of the muscle.
