Surgeons at the Maastricht University Hospital (Maastricht UMC+) in the Netherlands have recently completed an ultramicrosurgery with the assistance of surgical robots. This is the world's first ultramicroscopic surgery assisted by robots.
Developed by Microsure, this robot is designed to perform this type of sophisticated surgery. With the help of the Microsure surgical robot, the surgeon's hand movements are more precise and local, and the system also reduces any hand tremors.
The Maastricht Hospital this time was a "lymphatic venous anastomosis", which was to connect small lymphatic vessels to adjacent venules to relieve lymphedema symptoms in cancer patients who had been treated.
Lymphedema is a common symptom after cancer treatment, because the surgical removal of lymph nodes or chemotherapy radiation to the lymph nodes, the lymphatic system function is worse, the reflux is slowed or blocked, resulting in severe swelling and pain in the body tissues.
During the operation, the surgeon sutured a blood vessel with a diameter of 0.3 to 0.8 mm through a Microsure surgical robot. This is the first time that the robot has been used for this fine-degree vascular suture, and the patient undergoing surgery performed well.
Microsure technology chief Raimondo Cau said that Microsure was very pleased and proud that the robot was the first to help with this ultra-microsurgery and the feedback from the surgeon was very good.
Cau said that they intend to gradually expand the types of ultra-microsurgery that Microsure robots can assist in the future, such as troublesome tissue reconstruction and tumor removal surgery.
