Since the defibrillator has a hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, it is no longer dead

Release date: 2015-03-17

Recently, studies published by the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF) and the Tufts Medical Center in Boston have demonstrated that implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICDs), as well as other modern treatments, have successfully reduced hypertrophic myocardium. Mortality in patients with disease (HCM) prolongs their longevity (life expectancy).

The study "changes our perception of HCM from a terrible, largely incurable disease to a contemporary low-mortality disease that can be effectively treated." Dr. Barry Maron, Principal Investigator, HCM Center Say. Dr. Maron will present the findings at the March 14th meeting of the American College of Cardiology (ACC).

HCM is a genetic heart disease with abnormal heart thickness. But despite this, many HCM patients still live a normal and healthy life. But those who develop heart problems are severely affected by their quality of life and can even lead to premature death. In particular, patients with HCM may have a sudden heart rhythm leading to sudden cardiac death (SCD).

With advances in research and technology, the therapeutic environment for adult HCM patients has changed dramatically over the past 10-15 years. For example, implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICDs), originally used to prevent sudden cardiac death in patients with coronary artery disease, are now commonly used in HCM patients with a higher risk of sudden death. Once the heartbeat is detected, the ICDs will return the heartbeat to normal rhythm by electric shock.

Dr. Maron, in order to understand how effective an implantable cardiac defibrillator is, from 1992 to 2011, he and a research team at Tufts University (led by his son Martin Long), with 1000 adult HCM patients as subjects , conducting a long-term monitoring experiment (mortality and cause of death). Results The mortality rate of adult patients with HCM was the same as that of normal adults. "Today's therapeutic interventions, including implantable cardiac defibrillators that prevent SCD, have dramatically changed the prospects for these patients," Dr. Maron said.

In this study, 4% of patients died of HCM-related diseases, and 6% escaped from the edge of life and death, due to implanted cardiac defibrillators (also heart transplant surgery, surgical muscle resection) Or defibrillation outside the hospital). It is worth noting that in 17 cases of sudden death in 17 HCM patients, 6 patients refused the treatment of implantable cardiac defibrillators, and 11 were evaluated in the 1990s, namely implantable defibrillation. Before the device is widely used, or is judged to have no risk of disease, an implantable cardiac defibrillator is not required.
