Since electronic communication has abandoned the skills of pigeons as messengers, their job opportunities have become very rare. However, it seems that pigeons may now be used to analyze medical images. Recently, a team trained pigeons to distinguish between healthy and cancerous breast tissue.
Richard Levenson and colleagues from the University of California, Davis, showed the pigeons a microscope image of the breast tissue. The researchers then reward the pigeons when they correctly eat the colored buttons that correspond to cancerous or healthy tissue. After each training lasting 1 hour and 15 times, the pigeons got the correct answer 85%.
Combining the responses from a group of 4 pigeons increases the accuracy to 99%. They are also good at discovering small pieces of calcium deposits associated with cancer that present white pitting in mammography.
The third task - identifying cancerous breast masses in mammography has proven to be too difficult. Even for humans, these features are very subtle and challenging to detect. The radiologist's accuracy in evaluating the images in this study was only 80%.
The visual ability of the pigeons has been fully studied: they recognize human faces, the letters of the alphabet, and even the paintings of Monet and Picasso. Although doctors do not seek help in cancer diagnosis for pigeons in a short period of time, these birds can play a useful role in the development of image analysis technology. Researchers have developed software for processing medical images that make it easier for doctors to interpret them. However, it takes several hours to analyze the software to help or prevent the diagnosis.
Levenson said that pigeons will come in handy at this time. He said that pigeons are very sensitive to the characteristics of medical images that are important for diagnosis, making them ideal for providing feedback in some ways. “Because researchers and engineers make innovations, pigeons can help them.â€
