Google's DeepMind is known for developing cutting-edge self-learning software. In the past few days, the company's artificial intelligence robot AlphaGo is challenging the world's number one Korean Go player Li Shishi, and the entire Internet has been overwhelmed.
Smoke entirely, shoulder Alphabet parent company Google to enter the life sciences sacred mission, DeepMind will bring its powerful machine learning algorithms, open up a new battleground in the health care field.
DeepMind Health and doctors work together to create medical software
As an artificial intelligence company owned by a web search service provider, DeepMind is advancing into the medical technology industry by applying its expertise to healthcare.
DeepMind said on Wednesday that its London subsidiary has teamed up with Imperial College London and the Royal Free NHS Trust in London to form DeepMind Health. Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind, said that the new department, which currently has only 15 people, will grow rapidly in the future. The company also hired two doctors to work together to guide research and development.
One of the doctors is Dominic King, one of the technology developers at Hark, a British medical startup that has been acquired by DeepMind as part of his career in medical technology. Hark has developed a task-managed smartphone app for clinicians.
Suleiman said: "At present, we are mainly committed to building trust with clinicians and building new products with doctors and nurses." In the end, DeepMind hopes to apply its machine learning technology to the healthcare field.
DeepMindHealth designed a software called Streams. In the pilot program of the Royal Free Hospital, it allows doctors to quickly view the results of the medical examination. Chris Laing, deputy director of patient safety at the hospital, said Streams allowed him to view the patient's blood test results in seconds, determine the risk of acute kidney damage, and improve patient care. "The system can alert directly and prioritize the patient's ability, which was previously impossible," Ryan said.
A large part of this cooperation was facilitated by Google's parent company, Alphabet, which is an extension of the company's research into Kang technology. The California-based Mountain View company also runs a life sciences research group, Verily, and Calico, an anti-aging company, and Google itself is doing some basic scientific research. The company also built a sophisticated cloud computing system for medical institutions in the UK that are separate from Google's main infrastructure.
"DeepMind's long-term goal is to provide clinicians with tools to use and analyze a large stream of information that is overwhelmed," Suleiman said.
Artificial intelligence helps medical big data mining
Massive medical data processing requires a stronger algorithm. In recent years, in addition to traditional statistical analysis algorithms, DeepLearning and artificial intelligence have become powerful weapons for acquiring knowledge from massive data, and have gradually shown advantages in medical research applications based on big data. Give a few examples:
- IBM announced in 2015 that its supercomputer Watson began providing genomic data analysis to help doctors provide the basis for the treatment of cancer and other diseases.
- Deep Genomics, a Canadian company, used deep learning techniques to find mutation sites that are closely related to cancer from non-coding segments of the genome.
- San Francisco-based American company Enlitic (enlitic.com) is committed to making more accurate clinical diagnoses with big data and deep learning.
With the continuous development of computer technology, with the advent of cloud computing, mobile Internet and Internet of Things, machine learning and artificial intelligence will be in full swing, helping medical research and bringing medical care into a new future.
