This brain scan helmet can detect concussions

Release date: 2016-05-13

Accidents such as injuries and car accidents in sports can cause concussions. The injured need to seek medical EEG examination as soon as possible to determine whether they have a concussion. To help these wounded people confirm the results as soon as possible, the Norwegian startup Smartbrain recently developed a special helmet called EmerEEG that can perform EEG examinations at the scene of the accident.

At present, the routine examination method of EEG is to place electrodes on the head of the injured person, and the position of the head electrode is more consistent with the anatomical division of the cerebral cortex. An experienced doctor then uses EEG readings to determine if the casualty has a concussion. The EmerEEG helmet has built-in electrodes and is attached to a flexible film. Once the patient on the ambulance wears the helmet, the film will gently expand to ensure that all the electrodes are connected together.

The helmet can take EEG readings in less than a minute and compare it to the data from patients with known traumatic brain injury through software and data. The ambulance staff then sends these EEG readings to the hospital to prepare in advance.
