Data Map: A man who successfully performed a face-changing operation embraced the doctor and expressed his gratitude.
Olivier Bastien, a French biomedical institution, recently revealed that after the body of the 40-year-old man was physically repelled, the doctor removed his previously transplanted face last November and put him into a coma waiting for a new donation.
The donor appeared two months later, and a hospital in Paris subsequently performed a second transplant. This high-risk surgery typically takes a full day. The doctor said it would take several weeks to determine if the second surgery was successful.
It is reported that the majority of face transplants are people who have experienced accidents, violence or rare genetic mutations. After surgery, they can help patients recover basic functions such as breathing, eating and talking, and regain nonverbal communication through smiles, frowns and other actions. However, after surgery, patients need to rely on drugs such as immunosuppressive agents to slow the rejection of foreign organs, and these drugs increase the risk of infection and cancer.
Face transplantation is a rare operation, with less than 40 cases worldwide, of which at least 6 have passed away.
The world's first patient to receive a face transplant was the French woman Dinova. After her surgery in November 2005, she suffered from severe rejection and suffered from two types of cancer. She died last April, at the age of 49.
